Wine of the Month: Dalla Valle - Maya 2017

As Super Bowl weekend approaches, our wine partner, Wine Rose, has chosen a US red blend from the famous Napa Valley region in California. Located on the famed eastern hillsides of Oakville, Dalla Valle Vineyards has earned acclaim as one of world’s most celebrated wine estates, yielding wines of extraordinary character and complexity

The Estate

Dalla Valle Vineyards is recognized as one of Napa Valley’s preeminent family-run wineries, founded in 1986 by Naoko and her late husband Gustav Dalla Valle. The Estate hit the headlines in the early-1990s when it emerged alongside Screaming Eagle, Colgin Cellars, Bryant Family and Harlan Estate as one of the original ‘Cult Wines’ of Napa, and it has remained at the top table ever since.

The Wine

Maya, named after founders daughter, is a special blend of Maya’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, in the eastern hills of Oakville, and the best blocks of Cabernet Franc. First produced thirty vintages ago.

The Tasting profile

The bright red-purple hue of the wine is a great indicator of its depth and fresh fruit character. Aromas of raspberry, thyme, rosemary, and incense light up the glass. As the wine opens, these aromatic notes knit together to create increasingly complex patterns. On the palate, the immediate impression is one of raspberry coulis, bringing attention to the precise red fruit character, along with vanilla bean, clove, toasted almonds and campfire. At present, the wine is showing its youth, with the fruit flavors and bold structure driving the sensation. This bolds well for the future, as the underlying framework and bold flavor profile will carry the wine for years to come.
